Aniket Verma: SRH's Six-Hitting Sensation from Bhopal

A Sleepless Night Before the Big Stage

On March 22, 2025, Aniket Verma lay awake, his mind racing with visions of his impending debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Earlier that day, he had received the exhilarating news of his inclusion in the playing XI. The 23-year-old from Bhopal couldn't help but visualize various match scenarios, strategizing on how to make a significant impact.

From Local Leagues to IPL: A Meteoric Rise

Aniket's journey to the IPL spotlight is a testament to seizing opportunities. In 2024, during the Madhya Pradesh Premier League, he amassed 273 runs in six innings, highlighted by a blistering 32-ball century and a total of 25 sixes—both tournament records. These performances caught the attention of SRH scouts, leading to a trial ahead of the mega auction.

Making the Most of the Trial

During the SRH trials, Aniket showcased his prowess under simulated match conditions. In a PowerPlay scenario requiring 65 runs in 6 overs, he and his partner achieved the target effortlessly. In a subsequent challenge to score over 85 runs in 8 overs, they accomplished it in just 4 overs. Aniket's individual contributions of 72 and 64 runs in these scenarios left an indelible mark on the selectors.

Debut Delight: A Six to Remember

Aniket's IPL debut was nothing short of cinematic. Entering the crease with just 10 balls remaining in the innings, he smashed a six off his very first delivery. This moment was particularly poignant for his paternal uncle, Amit Verma, who had been a pillar of support throughout Aniket's cricketing journey.

Overcoming Personal Tragedy

Having lost his mother at a young age, Aniket found solace and guidance under the care of his uncle Amit in Bhopal. Recognizing Aniket's passion for cricket, Amit ensured he received formal training despite financial constraints. He enrolled Aniket at the Ankur Cricket Academy, personally driving him 13 kilometers each day to attend practice sessions.

Early Signs of Brilliance

Aniket's prodigious talent was evident early on. At just 11 years old, he scored a remarkable 256 runs in a local league match. His coach, Jyoti Prakash Tyagi, was so impressed that he predicted Aniket would one day score 400 runs in an innings—a prophecy that came true two years later when Aniket achieved this feat in an inter-division match against Chambal. In that innings, he struck 41 fours and 16 sixes, underscoring his aggressive batting style.

Training Grounds: From Bhopal to the Big League

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges, but Aniket adapted by training at Faith Cricket Club on the outskirts of Bhopal. Practicing on an international-standard ground allowed him to refine his power-hitting and understand his range better. These sessions were instrumental in preparing him for the demands of professional cricket.

Learning from the Best

Now rubbing shoulders with international stars at SRH, Aniket is keen to learn from renowned six-hitters like Heinrich Klaasen. He has spent considerable time analyzing Klaasen's batting and seeks to incorporate similar techniques into his own game. Additionally, he admires Hardik Pandya and is eager to discuss batting nuances, particularly bat flow, with the Mumbai Indians captain when they cross paths.

A Bright Future Ahead

Aniket Verma's ascent from local leagues in Bhopal to the grand stage of the IPL is a narrative of determination, resilience, and unwavering support. As he continues to make his mark in the tournament, fans and cricket pundits alike will be watching closely, anticipating more fireworks from this young dynamo.
